Jocks&Nerds is a London-based bi-annual style bible which focuses on fashion, music, cinema, the arts, sport and leisure and travel from historic and contemporary standpoints. Aimed at a discerning audience, the thrust of the magazine has the notion that culture is formed out in the real world by real people - not by marketeers, self-interested industries and cookie-cutter celebrities. The magazine is not diluted by outside pressures and is 100% committed to creating unique content looking at today's culture and seeking out interesting people. Fundamentally the magazine is a celebration of a certain type of character - ambitious, creative, inquisitive, independent, hardy - and the magazine focuses on those people, famous or otherwise, who they feel express those values. Skin+Bones were invited to get involved with the magazine for its relaunch in the Summer of 2019, almost two years after it was forced to close down due to commercial pressures. We were onboard as part of the design team which also oversaw the art direction of the magazine which had no advertising and was made up of 256 pages of pure content. The desire to create something engaging and honest led to many key decisions regarding the presentation within the magazine from the use of fonts, a documentary style of photography and a frank and coloquial style of writing. An exciting project, the magazine successfully launched at targeted retail outlets as well as online.

Creating the new iteration of Jocks&Nerds magazine would be impossible without Indie from Skin+Bones. His skill and understanding are vital to the process of turning content into beautifully designed pages. I particularly like working directly with Indie in a collaborative way. Together we are able to discuss ideas, and he is always happy to push them as far as possible (even if we ultimately end back with our original design!!). He is also an excellent problem solver which is integral to being a great art director. More importantly, I enjoy his company. He has a vast knowledge of music and design, so we are always chatting about the arts. He has unwavering patience and is always happy. Working together is a fruitful and enjoyable experience.
